Great Lakes Shipwrecks
Great Lakes shipwrecks have always held a fascination with local history buffs especially if they happen to be scuba divers also. Diving down to the bottom of the lake to come into contact with a shipwreck can be quite a humiliating and yet exciting experience. Shipwrecks are usually thought of being located in the oceans however; there are more than 6,000 sunken ships in the Great Lakes.
The freshwater is cold at the bottom of the lakes and provides perfect conditions for preserving the wrecks. Likewise, it is imperative to have the proper scuba diving equipment when diving in these colder waters. Many of the dive shops of the Great Lakes region offer charter services to dive the wrecks of the local area. To think that local divers would want to travel to other worldly spots for their wreck diving excursions when there are plenty of local dive sites available right in their own backyard so to speak. Check on the Internet or at your local library for wrecks that have happened in your area.
You will probably find that scuba divers explore many of the wrecks regularly. A wreck diver would need to be extra cautious swimming around the wreck as there are many hazards to be found. Wreck diving provides the diver with sense of awe and timelessness as he/she engages with the historical past. So if you are a diver looking for a little bit different adventure why not consider the Great Lakes for your next scuba diving trip.
